SEED BALLS - Restoring Natural Habitats

What are Seed Balls?

Seed balls, also known as "seed bombs" or "earth balls",  consist of seeds mixed with clay and other material to assist germination. Our Seed Ball Kits and Seed Babies are packed with lots of good stuff: sphagnum peat moss, perlite, sand, clay, plant food, and tons of wildflower seeds.

Seed balls have ancient origins, dating back to ancient Egypt. They were reintroduced in the 1930s as part of the natural farming movement, an agricultural method that eschews the use of technology. Natural farming works in harmony with the natural biodiversity of each area, fostering interactions among plants and animals to support both the ecosystem and food crops.

How to "Plant" a Seed Ball:

  1. Choose a spot: Find a sunny or partially shaded location with bare soil, or place the seed baby in a pot or container. Make sure the Seed Baby is in contact with the soil. Do not bury the seed ball or break it apart. (Do not place seed balls on private or public land without permission.)

  2. Water lightly and keep moist until seedlings emerge. Water regularly when seedlings are a few inches tall.

  3. ENJOY YOUR NEW WILDFLOWER GARDEN!
