    Botanical NamesRebutia gibbulosa

    Name Meaning:

    • Rebutia: Named after Pierre Rebut (1827-1902), a French botanist who specialized in cacti.
    • gibbulosa: Latin gibbus, "hump," "hunchback," or "swelling", referring to the cactus's blooms, which are notably large in proportion to the small size of the plant's body.

    Native Range: South America (mountainous, rocky slopes of Bolivia and Argentina)

    Rebutia species are often self-fertile, meaning they can set seeds without needing a second plant for cross-pollination.

    1. Winter care: A cooler winter dormancy period is crucial for blooming in the spring. Protect from prolonged freezing temperatures.
    2. During the growing season (spring/summer): Water thoroughly, but only when the soil is completely dry. During the dormant season (fall/winter): Drastically reduce watering, only watering lightly if the plant begins to shrivel. 
    3. Feeding: Fertilize once a month during the active growing season with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer. DO NOT FERTILIZE during the dormant season.
