Some have firm, tough leaves, while others have softer leaves that contain "leaf windows" with translucent panels. They are particularly easy to grow and rarely affected by common succulent pests and diseases.

    Common Name: Star Cactus

    Botanical Name: Haworthia retusa

    Name Meaning: 

    • Haworthia: honors the British entomologist, botanist, and carcinologist Adrian Hardy Haworth (1768-1833).
    • retusa: Latin retusus, "blunt" or "notched", referring to the plant's distinctly rounded or truncated leaf tips that curve backward.

    Plant Family: Asphodelaceae (asparagoid lilies)

    Native Range: South Africa (semi-arid regions of Cape Province)

    Bloom: In spring and summer, this plant produces small, delicate, white or pale pink tubular flowers on thin, tall (to 20 in.) stalks, followed by oblong seed capsules.

    Growth Rate/Habit: Slow/Rosette (with multiple offsets [pups] growing around the base)
